Simple Kawaii Amigurumi Animal Keychains

hiddennamesstudio

Animals in this pattern: Fox, Bat, Wolf/Dog, Bear, Rabbit (2 ear types), Fox, Raccoon, Cat (to tail types).

This simple pattern is perfect for beginners, designed to be quick and easy, yet with various options and features to choose from. Shown in the above image is the bat, cat with fluffy tail, rabbit, and bear variations. The body is optional; you can instead use beads or charms or anything else you may choose.

I used different yarn weights with coordinating hook sizes in the example, so what type of yarn you use will have to depend on what your end goal is. For instance, if I want to make a cat with the fluffy tail and make it look fluffy, I can use a yarn that would respond well either to: needle felting techniques; use a textured specialty yarn (faux fur, eyelash, etc); or use a yarn that, when brushed, becomes fuzzy. For this last option, a fur slicker/nap brush, a sort of wire brush with fine sharp “teeth” used commonly in pet grooming, is recommended.

Materials

(materials based on your specific goals may change, so some specific items might not be listed) - Toy Stuffing (like polyfil)

- Yarn (any type/weight should work, only keep in mind that your yarn weight can change the result by size. The cat and bear were made with a medium 4 weight yarn and a 3mm hook, while the bat was somewhere around a sport weight yarn, using a 2mm, approximately.)

- Tapestry, yarn, and/or large craft needle (to sew pieces together)

- Safety Eyes and/or Embroidery thread (very light weight lace yarn can also be used). A smaller sewing or embroidery needle may be needed for details.

- Felt

- Scissors

- Crochet Hook (size depends on what yarn you will use. For the medium 4 weight yarn examples, the cat and the bear, I used a 3mm size hook.)

Abbriviations

(In US terms)

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

inc = increase

dec = invisible decrease

MR = magic ring/circle

ch = chain

Instructions

Rounds are worked in a continuous spiral. Stuff head and other pieces while working on decreasing. Stuffing the pieces will be implied. Ears and the skinny cat tail do not need any stuffing. Parts can be interchangeable based off of your personal preference. If attaching safety eyes, put in place before you dec the hole too small.

Base Head

1: 6sc in MR (6)

2: (inc) *6 (12)

3: (sc, inc) *6 (18)

4: (2sc, inc) *6 (24)

5- 9: sc around (24)

10: (2sc, dec) *6 (18)

11: (sc, dec) *6 (12)

12: (dec) *6 (6)

Sl St. Fasten off. Leave tail for sewing (you need only do this for either the head or the body, not both). You may sew closed, but I personally found it easier and quicker to leave the base of the head open and simply sewing the body to the head with both parts “opened.”

Base Body

1: 8sc in MR (8)

2: (sc, inc) *4 (12)

3-4: sc around (12)

5: (2sc, dec) *3 (9)

6: sc around (9)

7: (sc, dec) *3 (6)

Sl st. Fasten off. Leave long tail for sewing (if did not leave long tail for sewing from head piece).

You can proceed in a number of other ways. - Instead of starting with 3sc in a MR, you can instead begin with 6sc in a MR, then do 6sc around for row 2. - You can make the tail (where it attaches to the body) smaller by sewing partially or fully closed. You can also add a 3rd row, being sure to dec *3 to get back down to 3sc in the row.

Skinny Tail

There are 2 options: crochet the tail or use something else. How well the crocheted version turns out will depend on the yarn and your tension. Wings

To draft the bat wings, figure out your basic shape. After the rest of the bat is assembled, take your bat and lay it on some paper. Draw a rectangle on each side of the bat to determine the desired size, as well as where you want the wings to sit (at the back, or at the base of the neck). You can either have each wing separate, or you can make as one piece. I have done the wings in one piece. If you make as one piece, be sure to leave the space between the wings connected. Cut out, fold in half (each rectangle represents a wing, and there should be a gap between them, the rectangles should be against one another, do NOT fold each rectangle in half). Cut again to remove any inconsistencies. Draw out your desired shape within the rectangle, keeping the wing span folded in half (one rectangle on each side, each rectangle facing the other). Cut out the shape. Unfold and place on a sheet of felt to cut out. Sew or glue on the wings to the back of the bat.

Assembly

Sew/attach facial features. Sew the ears to the head. (This is why I didn’t sew the head completely closed). If you wish to embroider or sew on details for the ears (such as pink inner ears), sew them on the ears before attaching ears to the head. Add details to wherever else you wish detail to go. For the fox you can sew on felt for a lighter face, or embroider either the face or the hood part of a fox head. Once all details are on their individual parts, sew each part together. This is the recommended order:

1.) Ears to Head

2.)Tail to Body

3.) Head to Body
